My Teaching Philosophy
As an educator, I have the utmost confidence that every individual is able to strive for success not only in their academic performance, but also in their social lifestyle. Thus, it is important to promote growth of creativity by stressing the importance of education as well as giving my students the freedom to think and discover knowledge. Each individual is unique therefore any ideas, opinions, criticisms and suggestions from them should be taken into consideration. These aspects are essential towards planning and developing more comprehensive lessons which are beneficial in the long run.
I believe in practicing professionalism such as showing good leadership skills. My favourite line would be, “If you are going to fail, do so through your ability and not your work rate”. Being an authoritarian will only create a distance between a lecturer and a student. As a lecturer, I should be able to attend to my students’ personal and academic activities whenever needed. I will also try to create a comfortable learning environment based on respect instead of fear, hence building strong rapport with students so that we can learn in a fun environment.
Students are my main priority and I am aware that each of them has different level of proficiency in expressing their thoughts. Communication is an important key to an effective teaching and learning process. By creating a student-centred learning, my students will be able to take charge of their own learning with little assistance from the lecturer. A student-centred learning enables me to coach and facilitate them throughout the learning process by providing useful guidelines and information for them to achieve their learning target. This will nurture a sense of responsibility in them.
By being more resourceful, I will be able to achieve self-satisfaction and success in teaching. I am open to new ideas and suggestions therefore I would like to be more involved in researches, attend educational talks and participate in seminar or conferences to further expand my knowledge. Moreover, keeping in touch with global issues and getting my hands on the latest technology are some of the ways to improve myself. These aspects are incorporated into my classroom practice because as for me, knowledge-wise educators should be a few steps ahead of their students. Therefore I have to be well-prepared by planning my time and materials efficiently to ensure that a successful lesson takes place. It is also wise to reflect on every lesson that has been conducted so that I can identify the strengths and rectify the weaknesses.
My students should also be encouraged to explore everything, including their surrounding environment. To achieve this, I would vary my teaching styles to develop the students' critical thinking skills. Learning should not be limited within the four walls. I will try to make my lessons more relevant so that my students can relate whatever they learn in the classroom to the real-life situations. In the end, my students are to have self-confidence, good interpersonal skills with excellent knowledge once they have mastered the crucial skills to survive in career of engineering and perhaps, academician field.
